In all the fuss raised over the European Championships, Christiano Ronaldo, the Cricket and the start of Wimbledon, the UK quietly claimed victory over the rest of Europe in a sporting competition that seems largely to have escaped notice.

Now, let’s not pretend that the Athletics European Cup is one of the big trophies, but winning it is quite an achievement and an indication of just how well British athletes are performing in the run up to Beijing. Perhaps with the lower profile of the sport this year, a sport bereft of it’s really big names, the quietly talented British athletes might just get further flying under the radar.

Perhaps surprisingly, whilst the men were claiming overall victory, Britain’s women managed to cling to a third place finish. It was not so long ago that Britain’s women were relegated from the top rank of European athletics, to claim a place in the top three in an Olympic year is truly encouraging even if it was based on a series of good performances from athletes finishing in the top three of their event rather than any outright wins.

Athletics is not as high a profile sport as it used to be, the online betting site, Blue Square, don’t offer any bets on it at all. Despite that, when the Olympics come round Britain’s attention will be placed on the athletics once again, no doubt there athletes will fail drugs tests and British athletes will fail to perform, but a few good performances might just grab the attention back in the long run up to the 2012 games.

The outstanding performer for Britain’s men last weekend was Philips Idowu the triple-jumper who won his event and finds himself favourite for Gold in Beijing. Idowu has been a talent a long time in the making, gifted with the perfect physical attributes to catapult himself long distances, he has never quite stepped up and performed at the right time. This year, though, things seem to have been going differently, and the absence of Christian Olsson will strengthen his chances.

In the women’s competition Carolina Kluft is not competing in the Heptathlon, which, more than anything else has strengthened the chances of Britain’s Kelly Sotherton of climbing onto the top of the podium. Kluft has dominated women’s heptathlon so much over recent years that in her absence absolutely anyone could claim gold.

Elsewhere Christina Ohuruogo has managed to escape a ban from Beijing following her suspension for missing (not failing) drugs tests. The woman who won the World Championships recently will be a prominent figure if Britain are going to climb up the medal table.

Whether the Brits will actually perform to expectations in Beijing is anyone’s guess, but things seem to be looking positive going forwards to our own Olympics in four years.
