| From Russia With Love | |
Barcelona appear to have made an official approach for the Russian playmaker, Andrei Arshavin. Arshavin has only appeared twice in this tournament having been suspended for the opening pair of games, but has since made a massive impact on the competition and was instrumental in the Russian’s disposing of first Sweden and then the Dutch.
The price for Arshavin is said to be around £20m but this probably is not much of an issue for the likes of Barcelona. With Deco’s time at the Camp Nou drawing to a close and with several of the other superstars on their way out, most notably Ronaldinho, Arshavin seems like the type of player that could make a real difference to the Catalans.
Barcelona are not the only side linked with the Russian playmaker, Chelsea are said to have shown interest, along with just about every single other major European team, but Barcelona look like they are the most obvious destination with the player himself declaring that Barcelona is the side that he has always wanted to play for. Players say that a lot, admittedly, about any club they move to and usually after they have secured the transfer, if Arshavin is certain enough to say so before that surely is a sign of his dedication.
For the moment, though, everything is on hold as Hiddink and his men prepare to face the Spanish in the European Championship semi-final. After disposing of Holland in the previous round few would want to bet against the Russians, but Spain, surely are a different type of opposition and really feel like this year might just be the year for them to at last achieve the international victory that they have sought for so long. The two teams have met once before, although Russia were without Arshavin and the Spanish won comfortably, even if the score line was slightly on the flattering side.
If you’re into football betting the victor of the Russia, Spain semi-final will probably dictate who is to win the player of the tournament award. According to online betting site Blue Square Arshavin and Villa are joint favourites for the award, and one imagines that whichever comes to the fore and leads their team to the final will probably secure the award.
It seems unlikely that Russia will win the whole thing, if Germany do no one will have learnt anything new, that is for certain. If the Spanish go all the way then comment will be made of them finally breaking their duck, which will be a surprise in itself, but probably not altogether unexpected bearing in mind the calibre of player at the disposal of Luis Aragones, whatever happens from this stage, though, Arshavin is almost certainly the find of the tournament.
