Andy Roddick vs. Fernando Gonzalez 3:0 tip Gonzalez | Bet 10 at 2.95 with PinnacleSports |
A brilliant match to be played under lights between one of America's favourite sons Andy Roddick and one of the tennis world's most explosive and exciting figures in Fernando Gonzalez. Both men have had their concerns in the first week - Roddick came from a set and a break down against Gulbis and didn't play overly well against Seppi which was evident by his smashed racket in the third set, while Gonzalez overcame a spirited Navarro in R1, had an ankle injury scare against Reynolds in R2 and looked as if he didn't know how to close out the match in the third set of his match against Nieminen which he eventually won in 4. The American's serve has been deadly accurate this week firing 55 aces and winning a combined 83% of points behind the first serve, not only that but he has produced twice as many winners as unforced errors (125-62) and has won 59 of 88 net approaches though the Latvian big man did expose him here with some heavy passing shots. Gonzo has produced 34 aces, has won 79% behind the first ball and has produced 167 winners whilst keeping the unforced error count down to a comparatively respectable 105 given he goes for his shots a lot more. The Olympic silver medallist's forehand was working a treat against the Finn, but the backhand was also on fire with several topspin winners coupled with some troublesome backhand slices which one felt Jarkko never really felt comfortable with having to generate his own power. The 10-match h2h series stands at 7-3 in Roddick's favour but the matches on this terrain are split at 3-apiece though the A-Rod has won the past 3 played in the States. Perhaps is utilising the forecourt a little more in the realisation that he'll need to adopt such a strategy against the bigger boys who he clearly has trouble negating the power and brute force, and the Chilean falls right into that category. The forehand is going to really test the defensive attributes and the often-maligned mental and physical patience of Roddick but as always is the case with Fernando it depends on his mindset on the day. Gonzalez is a formidable returner and if he manages to put some heavy pressure on the Roddick serve as Gulbis managed to for the best part of 2 sets, then he'll find the American's game wilt and the crowd will be silenced. Both players are extremely hungry and have the artillery to win the match, but I just feel Gonzalez has more bows to his armoury and given that Andy had so much trouble making inroads into the inferior serve of Seppi he could be blown away if the Chilean boasts a good first ball percentage.
