Davydenko has won both previous encounters including a blitzing win at the AO on this surface last year, winning 59% of second serve balls from Muller and being able to quell the Luxmerbourg player's heavy game as he does so often. The Russian has returned to form despite a questionable preparation and is obviously motivated to defend his points having been bundled out by Fed at semi final stage the last two years, and he proved too solid for compatriot Dmitry Tursunov as he showed some very good returning on the Russian's big serve and was able to punish him on the counter-attack. He has spent exactly 7 hours out on court in 3 matches and has not lost a set, whilst his opponent here Gilles Muller has slugged it out for just under 10 hours playing 14 sets and that's not taking into consideration that he contested another 8 sets in qualifying that lasted another 5 hours and 53 minutes. He tends to come good at this time of year despite some lacklustre form all-round, and his serving has been a major factor of his two epic comebacks against Haas and Almagro producing a combined 72 aces and 80% behind the first ball. However, his ability to produce the cheap points on delivery is almost as impressive as his ability to remain patient is unimpressive. He is a fiery character with a very attacking game, and the fact he has committed almost 200 unforced errors in his first 3 matches mean that he will have a torrid time against Davydenko who is known for his defensive qualities and being able to force the extra ball from his opponent (unlike Muller's last two opponents Haas and Almagro who play a similarly aggressive style of game).
