Gilles Muller has gone on a giant-killing tear through the men's draw, taking out Tommy Haas, Nicolas Almagro and Nikolay Davydenko in some marathon efforts. The man from Luxembourg leads the tournament aces leaderboard with 112, but not only has he been formidable behind the first ball his attacking prowess for anything remotely short has been something to admire. There are some obvious concerns though - Muller has very little experience on the big stage let alone playing a QF against one of the world's greatest ever players on Arthur Ashe stadium, and I'm sure Federer will make that be known. Muller has also had some very wayward patches in his matches whereby the unforced error count goes a little out of control, and has also had trouble on his second ball where Haas managed to take 66% of points and Davydenko 59%. That's also not mentioning the fact that since he arrived at Flushing Meadows, Gilles has spent a touch over 19 hours on court slugging his way through qualifying before his herculian efforts in the main draw. Sure to make him work, Federer has spent a mere 519 minutes (less than half his opponent) in making his way here. The four-time defending champion suffered some scary moments against Andreev and once again the forehand errors and some questionable work ethic were the main points of contention, but Federer managed to find some grit and remain strong under pressure and managed to save 13 of the 15 break points he faced against the in-form Andreev. Despite his concerns, the Swiss has still conjured up 198 winners to 140 unforced errors, has dropped serve just 5 times and in each match has won at least half of the points behind his ever-reliable and difficult second serve. Not often does the great man lose to a player as one-dimensional as Muller in terms of power and hitting through the opponent, so he will need to do what he did successfully against Davydenko which is mix up the serve with some volley approaches behind it.
